Polar hat - pattern

While I was flying from San Francisco to Paris on Wednesday, I was so nervous (or better to say, terrified) that I had do do something... Once again crochet saved me, giving me something else to think about. So I came up with this hat for my aunt who is seriously ill and will need it. I made it with less than a skein of Rowan Polar, leftover from my mom's poncho (previous post). I've started following Sandra Huffines' chemo cap pattern, and then change it as it follows:

Hook: US 11 / 8mm
Gauge: loose

Rnd 1: Chain 4, join in round. Ch2 , work 11 dc into ring, join.
Rnd 2: Ch2, in next st *2dc in ea st* around, join. (23)
Rnd 3: Ch2, in next st *1dc in next st, 2dc in next st* around, join. (34 dc)
Rnd 4: Ch2, in next st *1dc in next 2st, 2dc in next st* around, join. (45 dc)

Rnd 5-7: Ch 1, hdc in every st around, do not join.
Rnd 8-14: Ch 1, sc in every st around, do not join.
Rnd 15: Ch 1, sc in 3 sts, *decrease 1 sc every 4 sts*. Join.

Rnd 16: Work (sc, ch2) in every st around, join.
Fasten off.

Hi: Love the hat, looks great on the model, interesting pattern but simple! It looks like there is a visor, but when I read the instructions, I don't see any stiches to make the visor? Can you clear up my cloudiness? Are you counting the chain 2 at the beginning of each round in the total count at the end of the round? I am using 2 strands of Patons worsted wool, instead of the Rowan! Thanks, Roux

Dear Roux, the "brim effect" is due to the fact that I didn't join the final rows, so the last row overlaps a little with its beginning. If you want a bigger brim just make twice the last row I guess. For the "chain 2" I counted it as one double chain. Enjoy and share a pic of your hat with us once it's finished! :)

Dear Pippa, I have a friend going through cancer and has lost her hair. I am unemployed and found in my knitting box 2 skeins of 4ply worsted weight and have all the crochet hooks. My Question....With this 4 ply what hook size do I use. Her bald head is 22 inches. I want to start this asap. TY and let me know. Lisa

Dear Pippa, what do you mean when you say do not join? I am new to this wonderful creative world of crochet so apologies for the question. Regards Kim

I love this pattern and it is going together so easy and quick, however i have one Q, when on the end of rows 5-7 do you mean to just continue on around without joining so as to make it swirl in one continuous crochet to the start and beyond to the end?
Thank you so much!
Debbie
